HHC

HHC, also known as hexahydrocannabinol, was first developed in 1944 by Roger Adams, an American chemist. Adams achieved this by adding hydrogen molecules to Delta-9 THC through a process called hydrogenation. Unlike THC, HHC is not actually a THC compound, but rather a hemp-derived cannabinoid.

HHC has gained attention as one of the many hemp-derived cannabinoids emerging in the market, such as delta 8 THC and delta-10 THC. However, it remains poorly understood by the general public. Information about its legality, effects on the body, and natural occurrence in cannabis plants appears contradictory when searched online.

The complexity surrounding HHC arises from its recent introduction to the market. Currently, only a few retailers sell HHC, primarily in the form of vape cartridges. Despite its limited availability, HHC shows promising potential, and it is likely to gain more attention in the near future.

While delta-8 THC, the most popular hemp-derived cannabinoid, faces bans by state and federal agencies, HHC offers a slightly more favorable legal status and appeal. This is because HHC is not classified as a THC compound. There are also claims that HHC may not be detected in drug tests, although this assertion is based solely on anecdotal evidence.

To understand HHC better, it is essential to know how it is produced. The HHC cannabinoid is now typically derived from hemp, the cannabis plant with low THC content legalized by Congress in the 2018 farm bill. In terms of its chemical composition, HHC contains an additional hydrogen molecule that is absent in THC. Consumers and scientists have noted that HHC induces less potent and psychoactive effects compared to conventional delta-9 THC. Manufacturers often compare the HHC high to that of delta-8 THC, but anecdotally, it is reported to be even less psychoactive than delta-8 THC.

In simple terms, HHC can produce THC-like effects on the body and mind, but it is less potent than delta-8 THC on a milligram-to-milligram basis. Delta-8 THC is generally considered to be about half as potent as the standard delta-9 THC.

Like other newly emerging hemp-derived cannabinoids, there is no standardized dosage or extensive research on the immediate and long-term effects of HHC consumption. In legal adult-use states, hemp-derived cannabinoids, including HHC, are not subject to the same regulations as cannabis, so there is no requirement for potency and purity testing by HHC product manufacturers and retailers.

It is important to note that HHC may show up on a drug test.
